The season begins in April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 26.25pt; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">Sports betting will be allowed in Puerto Rico under Law No 1,534. This piece of legislation is from 2019, but it was amended last year and signed into law by\u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">Gov. Wanda V\u00e1zquez Garced<\/span><\/strong>, and is aimed at generating employment and tax revenue for the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 26.25pt; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">But first, the law must face a series of challenges, Rivera Carri\u00f3n warned.\u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">The rules are not ready, and the amendments made in late 2020 still need to be included.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 26.25pt; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">Rivera Carri\u00f3n added that a budget hasn\u2019t been drawn up to finish the rules and set the matter in motion. \u201cNo budget has been set for the Sports Betting Division yet, we need it to finish establishing the rules,\u201d Rivera Carri\u00f3n said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 26.25pt; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">Under the new law, sports betting would become legal throughout the island, even though the\u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">Puerto Rican Olympic Committee<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is against it since, according to them, wagering on sporting events would be detrimental to sports integrity. Members of the horse racing industry aren\u2019t big fans either; they believe they will be losing part of their revenue to sports bets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 26.25pt; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">But the decision to accept that their tournaments are subject to sports betting lies in the hands of the Puerto Rican professional leagues. They would do that through agreements with betting companies, and would receive a sum from the in exchange, Rivera Carri\u00f3n said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 26.25pt; vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in 0in 7.5pt 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.5pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; color: black;\">Rivera Carri\u00f3n, appointed by Governor\u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">Pedro Pierluisi,<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is fully aware of the sports sector\u2019s opposition.
