The body reported that commercially licensed gaming including retail and online sports betting and igaming operations generated revenues of just under $30bn in 2020, a decline of $13.6bn compared to 2019.
In 2003, when only 11 states had legal gambling, commercial operators took $28.7bn. In 2020, at least some form of commercial gambling was available in 29 states.
Despite the overall decline in revenues, sports betting has grown across the US with revenues up 68.9 per cent year-on-year to $1.53bn.
AGA President and CEO, Bill Miller, said in a statement: “These numbers show the economic realities of Covid-19 and underscore the importance of targeted federal relief and ramped-up vaccine distribution to accelerate gaming’s recovery in 2021.”
